We had the pleasure of interviewing Andrew Roch, a seasoned educator with a diverse background that spans over three decades. Andrew's teaching career began in the early 1990s when he taught English and Politics in a French school located in the Alps. After this, he moved on to work for multinational IT chip manufacturer, Kingston Memory, where he developed and delivered a number of market-leading courses that are still taught today. Two of these courses were "Motivation Over Manipulation" and "Understanding Leadership Principles," which focused on developing leadership skills and ethical business practices.
In 2009, Andrew saw a gap in the market for Purser Training, and with the support of three pursers, he spent 14 months developing the industry's first Purser course. This course has since evolved and is now an accredited IAMI/GUEST purser course. Andrew's expertise in this area has made him a sought-after consultant in the luxury yacht industry.
Throughout the interview, it was clear that Andrew has a genuine passion for education and training. His ability to identify gaps in the market and develop courses that address those gaps is a testament to his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Jess Douglas is a multi-talented artist and skipper who has made a name for herself by painting boats of all shapes and sizes. Her artistic journey began in the city of Plymouth, where she studied illustration and developed an interest in the grunge and grime of the urban environment. However, she eventually found herself drawn back to her hometown, where she started to crew part-time on a local commercial fishing boat.
Working on the fishing boat allowed Jess to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the trade, and she quickly became part of the "family" of local fishermen. However, she lost her inspiration for drawing after leaving her circle of artist friends, and ended up getting her skipper qualification and working as a deckhand on superyachts in the Mediterranean for three seasons.
It was only after 9 years of having "artist's block" that Jess rediscovered her passion for drawing by painting the boat of a skipper she knew. She promoted her work on Facebook and soon began receiving more and more orders from captains and crew to paint their vessels. Over the last 6 and a half years, Jess has painted well over 600 boats and sent her work all over the world.
Her artistic style is unique and captivating, with a focus on capturing the essence of each boat and its surroundings. Her paintings have become sought after by boat owners and enthusiasts, and she has built a thriving business from her passion.
