A long-awaited dialysis unit at Ennis Hospital is expected to be operational by the end of this year. The UL Hospitals Group confirmed last August that the tender process for a Contracted Satellite Hemodialysis Unit service in Ennis was in progress and that it had met with a number of renal care providers. Those in Clare seeking renal care at present have to travel to either the Renal Department at University Hospital Limerick or its satellite centre on the Dock Road in Limerick. Responding to Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway in the Seanad, Junior Minister Dara Calleary says a provider has been identified and the unit should open in the coming months.

Clare Gardaí are advising people to take "collective responsibility" for their friend group as they socialise over the weekend. A Clare farmer claims the agricultural sector in this county is being severely hindered by over-regulation. It comes amid renewed concern over the EU Nitrates Derogation which currently applies to large swathes of land in the North and East of the county, where farming activity will face the restriction. The measure was introduced following an EPA recommendation aimed at reducing instances of pollution in natural waterways from agricultural run-off. A Clare Government Senator is calling for a third new 96-bed block to be approved and delivered at University Hospital Limerick in order to tackle legacy capacity issues. It comes as the third HIQA Report in a row, published this week found patient privacy and dignity continues to be impacted by overcrowding. On it's latest unannounced visit the Health Inspection and Quality Authority found the level of overcrowding at Dooradoyle's Emergency Department was not consistent with a human-rights based approach to care. According to HIQA, University Hospital Limerick's Emergency Department has planned capacity for only 49 service users, but last year an average of 219 patients atended the ED every single day. Despite this, a Clare member of the Oireachtas Health Committee claims reopening a 24/7 Accident Emergency Department in Ennis goes against the wishes of the INMO and the Irish Medical Organisation. There are currently two-new 96 bed blocks planned for UHL which promise to increase bed capacity by 167 in real terms by 2027. But Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway believes until the clinical advice says otherwise, commitment to a third new 96 bed-block at UHL is the most practical solution for now. The Health Minister has commissioned a review though led by MidWest Regional Healthcare Executive Officer Sandra Broderick, that will analyse if another A&E is needed at either Ennis, Nenagh and St.Johns. HIQA's latest report found once again though that patient flow continues to be ineffectively managed at the region's main hospital. Speaking on the floor of the Dáil, Stephen Donnelly says the issue needs to be urgently resolved to improve patient outcomes at the hospital. A Clare Independent TD though believes the Minister must inject as much funding as possible into Ennis Hospital in order to maximise capacity there. Kilrush Deputy Violet Anne-Wynne claims that contrary to government predictions, the second 96-bed block currently planned for UHL is not due to come on stream until the third quarter of 2028. She insists that capital investment is needed in Ennis now as the reopening of the A&E is inevitable.

Clare's roads policing superintendent is urging people to take control of their own safety on the roads this Bank Holiday weekend. Seven road deaths have taken place over the May Bank Holiday period in the last five years, including one last year and four in 2022. Gardaí have this week announced the locations of nine static speed safety cameras due to be operational by the end of the year on national roads in Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Galway, Dublin, Wicklow, Donegal, Carlow and Mayo. Head of the Roads Policing Unit in the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division Superintendent Eddie Golden has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons it's up to passengers in cars as well as drivers to encourage good practice on the roads.

A Clare branch of the RNLI is warning the public that time is of the essence it comes to preventing water-related deaths this weekend. An inter-agency appeal has been launched to encourage water safety and preparedness over the coming summer months. Coinciding with the May bank holiday weekend, Water Safety Ireland, the Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI are jointly appealing to people heading back to the coast to exercise caution when planning water-related activities. If on a boat or water vessel, the advice is to wear a lifejacket, carry a reliable means of communication, keep a mobile phone in a watertight case and ensure someone knows when you're going and when you intend to be back. When planning activities on the water, people are again advised to carry an effective means of communication, assess weather and environmental conditions in advance, and seek help immediately if you or someone else appears to be in trouble. Swimmers, meanwhile, are encouraged to wear a wetsuit to stay warm, allow yourself to acclimatise to the water temperature slowly, wear a bright swimming cap and crucially, never swim alone. Charlie Glynn of Kilrush RNLI says when someone is in distress, "minutes and seconds" make all the difference. Other advice includes checking boats and watercraft such as kayaks and canoes are in good working order. It's also recommended that lifejackets are inspected to ensure they're fully effective. Clare Water Safety Officer Clare McGrath is reminding the public that the majority of water-related accidents happen when people don't intend to be in the water.

To celebrate Orchard Blossom Day, East Clare based Irish Seed Savers and the National Biodiversity Data Centre All Ireland Pollinator Plan, have come together to launch a new guide book. The guide was put together by both groups to provide information on how to create and manage traditional orchards and fruit trees for pollinators on the farm, garden or other areas of land. The guide was launched at the Irish Seed Savers centre at Capparoe near Scarriff by Ruth Wilson, Farmland Pollinator Officer with the National Biodiversity Data Centre All Ireland Pollinator Plan.

The Health Minister says he's not ruling out upgrading Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's hospitals to Model 3 facilities in the future. It follows the publication of yesterday's HIQA report on University Hospital Limerick which found that "dignity and privacy" of patients at the Dooradoyle facility was negatively impacted by overcrowding. Last week's inquest into the death of Shannon teenager Aoife Johnston at the facility heard from Emergency Consultant Dr James Gray that 300 extra beds would be needed there to eliminate the overcrowding crisis. Responding to Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson David Cullinane in the Dáil, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says a review of the healthcare needs of each region is in progress.

Clare County Council has been accused of missing an opportunity in failing to develop a south-east Clare village to its full potential. Bunratty-based Aontú local election candidate John Haugh is calling for greater attention to be given to Newmarket-on-Fergus with a view to boosting tourism in the area. It comes in a week when Ennistymon, Killaloe, Querrin and Labasheeda were allocated a total of €1.1 million in funding for rural towns and villages regeneration projects. Montpellier native Haugh, who's a professional filmmaker and project manager, says he's frustrated that more efforts aren't being made to have Newmarket village and Dromoland Castle work in tandem with each other.

It's being argued a new funding boost for the community functions of Clare County Council must translate into real improvements on the ground. Clare's Local Community Development Committee has been awarded an additional €85,000 in Government funding for additional staff resources. It's part of a €2.9 million allocation from the Department of Rural and Community Development aimed at supporting the staffing of Local Community Development Committees. Clare LCDC Chairperson and Independent Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn says while the funding is welcome, people in this county need to see enhanced services in their communities.

The introduction of rent pressure zones in parts of Clare has been blamed for the continuing exodus of landlords from the rental market in this county. It comes as a new report from the Residential Tenancies Board's has shown the gap between the monthly cost for new and existing tenants is widening. New tenants were paying just over €1,200 on average between October and December last year, up 20% on the same period in 2022, while in contrast, existing tenants were forking out €912, representing a jump of 9%. Douglas Hurley of DNG O'Sullivan Hurley in Ennis has been telling Clare FM's Fiona Cahill that while the impact of RPZs in Ennis and Shannon has yet to be fully felt here, it has tightened a market were demand is already outstripping supply.

A Clare TD has accused the Government of taking an "all or nothing" approach to immigration law in Ireland. The Cabinet sub-committee on migration is meeting today where updates are being heard on efforts to expedite the processing of asylum seeker applications. Coming in a week when the Government has received much backlash for its handling of immigration, today's meeting is discussing plans to implement a more efficient deportation system for people whose asylum applications are rejected. The Cabinet sub-committee which deals with migration is also addressing other means of easing the perceived immigration crisis such as finding more accommodation for international protection applicants currently residing here. Despite reports that the meeting would include discussion on changes to welfare payments for those fleeing the war in Ukraine, this isn't expected to be on the agenda. The meeting comes one day after the Rural Independents called for a debate on the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. Scariff Independent Deputy Michael McNamara believes the Government is conflating the laws within the pact rather than acknowledging that they can be voted on separately. It's been reported that last night's meeting of the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party heard Justice Minister Helen McEntee's performance has been "disastrous". There were also calls for her to appear before the next Fianna Fáil party meeting. Fianna Fáil Junior Minister Jack Chambers however claims the party has full confidence in the Justice Minister. Amid an ongoing rift between the Irish and UK governments on asylum seekers entering this country from over the border, the Tanaiste has told the Northern Ireland secretary that Gardaí will not be sent to police the border. Speaking in the House of Lords last night, former DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds says he doesn't want the North to be a "dumping ground" for returned asylum seekers.

Clare Senior Hurler Shane O'Donnell says it's an honour to be involved with Darkness into Light this year. The event raises vital funds aimed at delivering nationwide intervention and bereavement therapy services and helping people make the brave and difficult journey from the darkness of suicidal thoughts and self-harm into a brighter, more hopeful future. Over 100,000 participants are expected to gather at 230 official walks in 14 countries on May 11th, with a number of events taking place in Clare in Ennis, Shannon, Whitegate, Kilmihil and Killaloe-Ballina. 2022 All Star and Eire Óg clubman Shane O'Donnell has teamed up with Electric Ireland to launch this year's Darkness into Light and he believes it's a worthy cause.

There are calls for urgent clarity of the mortgage value of Clare homes impacted by pyrite after remedial works are carried out. It follows a meeting held between the Clare Pyrite Action Group, the Department of Housing and the Banking and Payments Federation on the matter. Just three grants have so far been paid out here under the enhanced defective blocks scheme and it's understood the Department have refused to commit to a proposal that provide homeowners with early capital funding. Grilled Asparagus, Prosciutto and Goats Cheese Toast Recipe: Serves 2 Ingredients: 4 sheets of prosciutto or Parma ham 1 bunch of asparagus 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil Pinch of salt and pepper 4 tbsp of St Tola Goats Cheese Spreadable or any other soft goats’ cheese 2 large slices of sourdough 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp local honey 1 tbsp peanut rayu Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line an oven tray with parchment paper. Lay out the ham sheets on the tray and bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until they're wonderfully crispy. Once done, set them aside. (Pro tip: These crispy ham bits can elevate your pastas, salads, and more for up to 3 days in the fridge!) 2. Trim off the woody ends of the asparagus. Drizzle them with balsamic vinegar and 1 tsp of olive oil, then grill them on a hot griddle pan or frying pan for 2 minutes per side until they're just tender. Season with salt and pepper, then set them aside. 3. Rub the sourdough slices all over with the remaining olive oil. Grill them on the hot griddle until they're beautifully charred and crispy on both sides. Remove them from the heat and spread the goat's cheese generously over each slice. 4. Layer on the grilled asparagus and crispy ham, then plate up your toasties. Drizzle them with honey and peanut rayu for that final flavor kick. Get ready to savour every bite of this gourmet delight!

Clare County Council is being urged to pay greater attention to roads and footpaths in Shannon which are said to be "in an awful state". It comes just two weeks after Clare was allocated over €2 million under the Local Improvement Scheme for repairs and improvement works on non-public rural roads and laneways. The Shannon Electoral Area accounts for 9% the county's roads network and has received 14% of the municipal road works budget for the coming year. Shannon Fine Gael local election candidate Tony Mulcahy insists people paying taxes for roads maintenance deserve to have proper infrastructure delivered.

Clare’s minor football manager says his squad will carry positive momentum into their Munster semi final clash with Cork. The Banner claimed Phase One honours for the first time since 2019 with an impressive 2-12 to 0-10 win over Tipperary. Second half goals from Shane O’Connell and Conor Burke helped Clare to the title, with Burke finishing the game on a personal tally of 1-8. Manager Dermot Coughlan says it was the best team performance he has ever seen.

Concern has emerged that a new support team aimed at alleviating overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick will only provide "sticking plaster relief". The taskforce will operate for the next month and will include the former President of the Irish Emergency Medicine Association and the HSE National Director of Acute Hospitals, along with clinical directors from Waterford University Hospital. It comes as the Health Service Executive has been granted planning permission for two new elective hospitals in Dublin, to be located in Blanchardstown and Crumlin. HSE Regional Health Forum West Member and Kilkee Fianna Fáil Councillor Cillian Murphy has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it's inexcusable at this point for government not to prioritise a second A&E in Ennis.

An MEP for this region admits farmers aren't receiving enough supports to facillitate environmentally-friendly farming. EU member states are expected to adopt proposed amendments to the Common Agricultural Policy, or CAP, on May 13th, which are expected to ease the administrative burden for farmers. Speaking at yesterday's meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue said "if we are asking farmers to achieve policy objectives, then they have to be at the heart of those discussions". Green Party MEP and Ireland South candidate Grace O'Sullivan says while farmers are getting good supports at present, more must be done to ensure a seamless transition to sustainable practices.

A local migrants rights group claims the Government is dealing with an immigration crisis of its own making, due to a failure to put proper reception conditions in place. New figures from the Department of Justice show less than 200 asylum seekers have been returned to the UK over a six-year period. It comes as an encampment of international protection applicants in Dublin has been removed this morning. On a week when the Irish and UK Governments have been at odds over the return of asylum seekers to the UK, the Justice Minister has now clarified the numbers presenting here from the north. Minister Helen McEntee prevously claimed over 80% of asylum seekers in Ireland have come over the border but has now pointed to Justice Department data which shows the true figure is in fact 91%. Despite this, a Downing Street spokesperson claims the UK has "no legal obligation" to accept the return of asylum seekers who cross the Common Travel Area. Under the Dublin III Regulation, which was a reciprocal return agreement between Ireland and the UK between 2015 and 2020, just 162 asylum seekers were returned to the UK. As 154 asylum seekers were returned here during the same period, this led to a net change of just eight people. Newmarket-on-Fergus native and Professor of Politics at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University Donncha Ó Beacháin believes Ireland is falling victim to Brexit-era anti-immigrant UK policies. The Rural Independents are calling for a debate on the EU Migration and Asylum Pact in the Dáil today. The pact would see changes in how asylum seekers are processed by placing a focus on efficiently returning unsuccessful applicants to their countries of origin, as well as expediting the processing of those from safe countries or with invalid documents. Rural Independents member and Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae insists a referendum on the matter is needed. It comes on a day when a major operation has taken place on Mount Street in Dublin to remove what's been described as a "tent city" outside the International Protection Office. Doras CEO John Lannon believes the Government only has itself to blame for the current emergency accommodation crisis.

The Principal of Clare's largest secondary school insists it's no surprise that students prefer a co-education model rather than attending same-sex institutions. It follows the findings of a new ESRI survey of over 2,300 teenagers nationwide which found that just 4% of students in Co-Ed schools said they would prefer to attend an all-boys or all-girls school. On the other two-thirds of students in same-sex schools said they would have preferred to attend a co-educational setting. Principal of St.Flannans College in Ennis, Fr.Ignatius McCormack believes attending a mixed school is much better for social development.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be holding donation clinics in Shannon from today in order to increase stocks ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend. Fresh blood for adults can be held for up to 21 days, while supplies for children and infants can only be stored for five days and at present the IBTS only has a 4-day supply available. The Shannon donation clinics will take place this afternoon and tomorrow Thursday from twenty past four at the Oakwood Arms Hotel until 7. Broadford based IBTS Recruitment Executive Alex O'Connor is urging donors to come forward.

Munster will be hoping to build on their impressive display against Leinster in last weekend’s opening fixtures in the Men’s Junior Interprovincial Series when they host Ulster this Saturday. Munster drew 20-20 with the defending champions at Kilkenny RFC, a side they had lost to by 45-21 last year. Ennis Rugby Club will be the venue for Munster’s meeting with Ulster, a side who finished second last year, thanks to wins over both Munster and Connacht. The government is being urged to "get its house in order" on immigration. It comes amid a dispute with the UK over returning asylum seekers to Britain, with Ireland working to close the loophole to send refugees back to the UK if they cross the border. The Cabinet has approved proposals from Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to quickly draft legislation so that the UK can again be designated as a safe country to return people seeking asylum. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Donnacha Ó Beacháin, a Newmarket on Fergus native, Professor of Politics at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University, and John Lannon, CEO of Doras.

The Government is being called on to acquire Barrington's Hospital for use as a second MidWest A&E. The 53-bed Limerick City facility, established in 1829, has officially been listed for sale today with a guide price of €12.5m. It comes just one week after the inquest into the death of Shannon sixteen-year-old Aoife Johnston heard that overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick is systematic. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran-Molloy believes acquiring the building is an open goal for the Health Minister to alleviate pressure in the MidWest.

Clare's Sinn Féin councillor is accusing the Government of conflating legitimate fundraising with gambling in a bill being tabled this week. The Gambling Regulation Bill 2022, which is being discussed in the Dáil today, would see the establishment of a Gambling Regulatory Authority, the creation of a gambling licensees register and would prohibit the participation of children in gambling activities. A recent survey by the Economic Research and Social Institute found over 400,000 people nationwide are now showing signs of a gambling addiction. Shannon Sinn Féin Councillor and General Election Candidate, Donna McGettigan is concerned clubs and community organisations will be unable to fundraise is the legislation is introduced.

A Clare GP is lending his voice to calls for the workload facing pharmacists to be drastically reduced. The Government is being called on to reform the funding model for pharmacies, amid complaints of burnout among staff members. Pharmacists and those working in pharmacies are said to be under "phenomenal pressure" due to workload increases coupled with medicine shortages.

Clare County Council will hire a second Dog Warden to focus on enforcing bye-laws on beaches this summer. The officer appointed to the role will have the authority to issue fines and remove dogs from the beach between the June and August period for any breaches of the rules. Since 2021, there has been one fine issued for dog fouling in Lahinch. County Dog Warden Frankie Coote says it was clear further resources were needed.

A Clare financial advisor is warning motorists of the "strenuous" process resulting from being involved in a crash with an uninsured driver. It comes as new data from the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland shows there's been an 11% increase in the number of claims over accidents caused by insured cars in the last year. In Clare alone, there were 39 such claims last year which is up one from 38 in 2022. Tommy Corbett of Carey Corbett Financial Solution says while the fallout from any collision is stressful, being involved in an incident in which one party doesn't have an insurance can be a headache.

There are calls for the enabling works to begin on reopening Ennis' A&E following the harrowing findings into the death of a Shannon Teenager at University Hospital Limerick. 16-year-old Aoife Johnston passed away from bacterial meningitis on December 19th 2022 after waiting twelve hours on chairs to see a doctor in the ED, despite presenting with an urgent GP referral letter querying sepsis. The consultant on call for that weekend, Dr.Jim Gray told her inquest that an additional 300 beds would be required to meet patient demand in the hospital, on top of the 144 new beds to come on stream by 2027. Kilkee based Friends of Ennis Hospital Spokesperson Deirdre Culligan fears without urgent action there will be more tragedies at UHL.

Urgent clarity is being sought on community healthcare beds due to come on stream in Clare. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly announced earlier this month that up to 25 step-down beds would be installed in Clare between July and September of this year. At the time, he Department of Health gave Cahercalla Community Hospital as the location of the beds but it's since emerged that they remain out for tender, meaning no facility has been confirmed as of yet. Scariff Independent TD and European election candidate for Ireland South, Michael McNamara is disappointed by the Government's lack of clear communication and the matter and believes people deserve to know about the plans in more detail.

Over €1.1m in funding has been allocated for four Clare regeneration projects in rural towns and villages. Ennistymon is the biggest beneficiary, receiving €495,000 for the creation of an inclusive and vibrant public square. Killaloe has been awarded €225,000 for a new public green space, while Querrin and Labasheeda will receive over €221,000 and €193,000 respectively to restore historic buildings for community use. Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway is hopeful boots will be on the ground soon to bring the projects to fruition.

There are calls to temporarily waive local property tax in West Clare in order to increase housing development. It comes amid renewed concern for the region following a directive issued by Minister for Planning, Kieran O'Donnell that prohibited the development of one-off homes on the N67 and N68. The Kilrush Electoral Area currently has the lowest level of home ownership through mortgages and loans in the county at a rate of just 23%. Lissycasey based Fianna Fáil local election candidate, Alan Troy believes a lack of basic amenities and services are leaving young people disillusioned about their future.

It's claimed there are strong indications that both multi-national and indigenous companies in Clare are on track to expand. It comes as new figures show over 11,000 jobs in this county are now supported by either the IDA or Enterprise Ireland. According to the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment, there are now 159 companies operating in the MidWest Region that are clients of the Industrial Development Agency. 70 of these are in Clare and currently employ over 6,000 people, with the majority of these multi-national companies based in Shannon. It marks a 20% increase in jobs created by the inward investment agency here in the past five years. The CEO of Shannon Chamber believes although there are challeneges such as accommodation, companies are attracted to the regions ecosystem of third level institutions, Shannon Airport and motorway infrastructure. Helen Downes says there are strong indicators that companies already here are keen to expand operations and increase employee headcount. Enterprise Ireland has also been driving job growth in Clare. The dedicated state body for the promotion of indigenous business on a global scale now supports 100 firms here, that employ over 5,200 people. The Head of Clare's Local Enterprise Office insists it's vital that if small and medium enterprises here are to achieve their desired growth, they must avail of all grants and explore new technologies to them. Padraic McElwee believes more start-ups in this county have the potential to be successful on the international stage if they can harness the benefits of artificial intelligence and robotics with their help.

A pilot scheme trialing new illegal dumping surveillance measures is being proposed for the Clarecastle area. It follows complaints of repeated environmental crime at a prominent historical and recreational site on the outskirts of the Clare village. Visitors to the Clareabbey Greenway last week were greeted by the sight of large refuse sacks, clothing, bed linen and loose rubbish discarded near the entrance to the thoroughfare. It's not the first time this has been observed in the area, with over 100 complaints related to illegal dumping having been made about Clareabbey in the last 15 years. Last week's scenes have prompted local representatives and activists to call for urgent action such as the implementation of surveillance measures. The use of CCTV and drones has been enabled in recent months, as Minister of State Ossian Smyth has signed off on regulations empowering local authorities to take such steps in sights blighted by litter. Clarecastle Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan believes that because of the extent of the problem at Clareabbey, the measure must come into play there first. Over the first three months of the year, 257 litter and illegal dumping complaints were received by Clare County Council. Last month alone, 96 were recorded which resulted in 10 fines being issued. Following the recent display in Clarecastle, local Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy has echoed the call for increased surveillance, so environmental criminals can get their just desserts.

It's claimed new avenues are urgently needed to help Clare households attempting to exit homelessness. It comes as the latest monthly figures from the Department of Housing show 80 adults were living homeless in March. According to MidWest Simon, there has been a particular surge in presentations from single adults. Regional Accommodation Manager Jonathan Shinnors says there is a severe shortage of one-bed and two-bedroom units for people hoping to leave emergency accommodation.

There are calls for multi-national companies coming to Clare to be required to contribute towards housing stock for new employees. It comes as new figures show there has been a 20% increase in jobs created by IDA client companies here in the last five years. The Industrial Development Agency now supports approximately 70 companies in this county, which employ almost 6,000 people. Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe believes introducing a mandatory housing directive would be hugely beneficial for both employees and employers.

There are calls for Ennis 2040 projects to be spread elsewhere in the county to ensure balanced regional growth in Clare. Under the strategy, the county town is forecast to benefit from four strategic infrastructure developments in a €45m investment. It's estimated the office and retail units planned for Abbey Street and Harvey's Quay along with housing at Francis Street and the Post Office Field boardwalk will create 200 new jobs and boost weekly town footfall by 20,000. Quilty Independent local election candidate Joseph Woulfe believes the retail developments should be relocated due to strong opposition in Ennis.

The Social Protection Minister claims her Department will do what they can to ensure free hot meals continue to be available at a Clare secondary school. It follows a parliamentary question from Kilrush TD Violet Anne-Wynne who asked that the Hot School Meals programme be extended for the entire year at Ennis Community College, which is an amalgamation of three schools. It comes one week after 900 additional school were approved for the scheme nationwide, meaning a further 24 schools in Clare are now eligible. Responding to Independent Deputy Wynne in the Dáil, Minister Heather Humphreys says her Department is committed to ensuring equality exists between all students.

Calls are being made for traffic-calming measures to be trialled at Blake's Corner in Ennistymon as a matter of urgency. A Judicial review initiated in 2022 has stalled the construction of a relief road bridge 80m upstream that would bypass the junction. The situation has been compounded as the protected status of the Linnane's and Blakes buildings means the infamous gap on the tight turn cannot be filled, nor can the adjacent pavement be resurfaced. North Clare Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy says potential solutions such as a one-way system and erecting a traffic display mirror must be tested.

Serious public safety concerns have been raised over the disturbance of wildlife at Ballyalla Lake on the outskirts of Ennis. It comes amid a recent spate of incidents involving people and dogs attempting to swim with swans at the site. The issue is known to cause distress to swanlings, while swans will generally put up an agressive defence, particularly during birthing and nesting seasons. Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote says it can lead to serious injuries for all involved.

A Clare Government TD has called for a state apology, following the death of Shannon teenager Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick. It follows a verdict of medical misadventure at the inquest into the death of the 16-year-old, who passed away in December 2022, after spending twelve hours on chairs in the Emergency Department.

A West Clare town is bucking a widespread national trend of closures in the hospitality sector. It follows a new analysis from the Restaurants Associations of Ireland which predicts an average of two food-led businesses will close their doors every single day this year.

A Clare developer believes only greater Government supports will bring down the "stubbornly high" cost of building materials. It comes as CSO data has revealed 129 new homes were completed in Clare in the first three months of the year which is 26% above the same period in 2023. Of these, 78 were scheme houses, 50 were single houses and one was an apartment. Ciaran Breen of Ciaran Breen Construction has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons the cost of building materials must come down if enough homes are to be built to meet demand.

The inauguration of the completion of the 2K Shannon Slí na Sláinte route will take place this weekend. The walk will take place on Sunday, April 28th at 12 noon from the start of the route beside the fire station Slí na Sláinte (The Path to Health) is a project of the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) and are found throughout Ireland to encourage people to walk the Slí routes as part of a regular exercise regime to encourage fitness and heart health. It's claimed rural West Clare is not getting its fair share of return investment from the local authority's coffers. It comes amid renewed concern for local population growth, over the widespread closure of post offices, pubs, shops and schools across the region. At present, over a fifth of the Kilrush Electoral Area's population are above retirement age, which is the highest proportion in the county. Cree based Independent local election candidate Dinny Gould insists major funding is needed to stimulate economic activity and prevent further decline.

It's hoped a significant increase in support payments could soon be forthcoming for Clare's family carers. It's after a private members bill which proposed abolishing the means testing for the weekly carers allowance passed through the Dáil without opposition last night. Although not legally binding , the approval of the private members bill put forward by the Regional Independents Group indicates strong support for the scrapping of means testing for carers allowance. At present to qualify carers cannot be employed or self-employed or do any voluntary work for more than 18.5 hours per week, while the maximum rate for a full-time carer looking after one person below retirement age is €248. Advocacy bodies have persistently called for the payment to be based on the needs of those receiving care, rather than by household income. The Netwatch Clare family carer of the year from Bunratty, Sinead O'Brien says the review process of the means test has added undue stress to her role. The Government estimates that family carers save the state roughly €20 billion annually. According to Census 2022, over 2,300 people in this county regularly provide over 40 hours of unpaid care to a family member on a weekly basis. Support Manager for Family Carers Ireland in Clare, Fiona Hartigan, says while abolishing the means test would be a welcome start, an abundance of further support is urgently needed for carers.

The low registration rate in Clare for a highly-publicised grant has been attributed to intense demands on business owners. Introduced in Budget 2024, the Increased Cost Of Business Grant offers successful applicants the equivalent of 50% of their commercial rates paid in 2023, capped at €5,000. 80% of small and medium businesses in Clare are eligible but just over 35% have applied for the scheme. With the deadline of May 1st fast approaching, Ennis Chamber President Sheila Lynch says in the midst of the "firefighting" businesses are forced to do each day, there's still time to apply.

A local medical practitioner believes misinformation is playing a part in low vaccine uptake for children. It comes as the HSE has launched a campaign to promote the importance of immunisation in protecting babies and children against the lives of measles, whooping cough and mumps. The uptake of primary childhood immunisation has declined across all vaccines since 2020, while HPSC figures show 48 cases of whooping cough and 16 laboratory-confirmed cases of measles have been reported in Ireland so far this year. Clare doctor and Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine Dr Emma Kearney says while clinic closures resulting from the pandemic are largely to blame for low uptake, misleading information on social media has resulted in some vaccine hesitancy.

This week is Organ Donor Awareness Week. Running until Saturday, the key campaign message continues to be built around sharing your wishes with your loved ones about organ donation with the theme, Don’t Leave Your Loved Ones In Doubt. This follows the signing of the Human Tissue Bill into law by the President, Michael D. Higgins, at the end of February. This means people will be deemed to be organ donors unless they have registered their wish not to donate. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by John Burns, Former Deputy Principal, Rice College, Founder, Burns Study Centre, his Younger Brother was an Organ Recipient and his Older Brother was an Organ Donor.

A protest will take place outside the Dáil today to highlight chronic overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. The demonstration will take place at Leinster House at 1pm and coincides with the fourth day of the inquest into the death of Shannon teenager Aoife Johnston at UHL in December 2022. The sixteen-year old passed away from bacterial meningitis after waiting 12 hours on chairs in the Emergency Department, and a doctor who treated her on the night has told the coroners court the ED "was not a safe environment". Organiser of today's protest, Mike Daly says services in the MidWest are nowhere near good enough.

A call has been made for the demolition of the Ennis Market Building. Built at a cost of €1.75m in 2016, the covered facility was intended to accommodate traders and farmers markets, while providing car-parking in its downtime. The site has struggled to attract vendors though and in December, Clare County Council contracted a private security firm to monitor the premises due to concerns for public safety, stemming from persistent instances of anti-social behaviour. Labour local election candidate in the Ennis Municipal District, Seamus Ryan, believes the structure should be knocked to the ground and repurposed rather than draining public funds.

125 Transition Year students from St.Flannan's College in Ennis will climb Croagh Patrick tomorrow to raise much needed funds for local charities. The money raised by the students will be donated to Cahercalla Community Care, Milford Hospice and Cancer Care Galway. Over €2,300 has already been raised by the students through various fundraising campaigns. Edel Vaughan, teacher at St.Flannans's, says the cause is very important to all at the school.

It's claimed Ennis and County Clare has lost one of its most genial and hardworking public representatives. It follows the passing of former Mayor of Ennis and Fianna Fáil Councillor Raymond Greene. Raymond was first elected to the town council in 1991 and was elected as the county town's first citizen the following year. Clare Fianna Fáil PRO Michael McTigue has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that Raymond was a man who never sought acclaim for his achievements and always put the needs of others before his own.

There has been a surge in support for the reopening of the Crusheen Rail Stop. In March, Clare County Council commissioned Repucon Consulting to conduct a feasibility study to examine the socio-economic benefits of re-instating the North Clare rail stop. Within the first two weeks, the survey has already received over 1,000 public submissions weighing in on the prospect of reinstating the line that closed to passenger traffic in 1976. Colman O'Raghallaigh from West On Track believes the reopening the station is inevitable.

A Clare farming representative believes the exodus of young people from agriculture is driving down the price of land. New data from the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland and Teagasc has revealed Clare has the lowest average price for farmland in Munster and the fifth-lowest nationwide. The agricultural sector supports 12,000 people in Clare, or roughly 20,000 of the county's population, and the average age of a farmer here is 59. O'Callaghan's Mills Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association representative Martin McMahon has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he believes land prices will fall over time if young people aren't incentivised to purse a career in the sector.

A Clare community worker has claimed that the ability to vote in local elections enables greater integration in communities. In the past fortnight, 12 Clare based community organisations have come together to help marginalised groups to register ahead of the upcoming local and European elections in June. The initiative will continue into early May and aims to provide assistance to people living in emergency accomodation and direct provision centres. Alina Senkova, Community Development worker with the Clare Local Development Company, says refugees need time to become familiar with their local representatives.

Over the past week, more European medals have come to Clare, with Odin McNulty of the West Clare Taekwon-Do Club picking up bronze in the patterns section of the Euro championships in Poland. The club is one of the fastest growing in the area, and members are now regularly featuring on national squads. Ahead of travelling to the championships, Clare FM's Derrick Lynch spoke with Odin and some other members of the club to find out how things are going.

It’s a busy weekend for the Cheese Press, Ger Woulfe, a musician from Cork, will play the Cheese Press in Ennistymon this Saturday. American artist Casey Black will also play there on Monday night.
