* Position format settings - changing the Position Format settings on your GPS device to suit the map grid system being use in the Country that you are visiting.

1. Bullitt – maker of the Motorola Defy Satellite Link

In late January filed for bankruptcy

Founders were paying for service to continue for 1 month

We are over that time period and everything is still working

19th February - Sky News understands that Exponent Private Equity, which has successfully backed companies including Quorn and Trainline, is expected to agree to a restructuring of Bullitt's finances in the coming weeks.

The change of control is expected to see the Business Growth Fund (BGF) - a £2.5bn vehicle set up by the UK's biggest high street lenders in the aftermath of the financial crisis - play a leading role in Bullitt's future.

People close to the talks said that an auction of Bullitt, which had been triggered by a large volume of unsold inventory, had resulted in a proposal led by the BGF, an existing shareholder in the business, and the company's co-founders.

If concluded, the deal would crystallise a rare disappointment for Exponent, which has seen each of its funds make impressive returns for investors since the firm was set up more than a decade ago.

So, As I understand it - Exponent have pulled out, this was the backer we talked about in last month’s podcast, who pulled out at the 11th hour.

And in conversations I have had with our contacts at Bullitt stated finance was being negotiated and it sounds like this is referring to the funding from BGF (Business Growth fund). The business growth fund was set up after the financial crisis and fingers crossed it can play a big roll in Bullitt’s future going forward.

BGF is an equity investor in the UK and Ireland that provides long-term, minority investment and value creation support to growing companies, it was set up.

So, let’s see what the future brings.

We were under the understanding that customers would be notified if anything was to change, but to date nobody has received any notifications, so no news is good news.

Motorola – they have not been discussed yet, what did you find out Andy with regard to this.

I am personally very disappointed by the scaremongering that has been online, as I said last time our thoughts have to be with all the staff at Bullitt around the world, who I know have worked very hard on this product and the other products they produce.

Backstory – TwoNav has been on our radar for several years.

6 or 7 years? OS teamed up with TwoNav to create a OS branded GPS unit.

We bought one at that stage and within 2 weeks it was on eBay, why?

This partnership did not work as OS do not have the expertise to build and grow this type of technology in the UK.

So late last year TwoNav kept coming up in conversation so

2. Bullitt - maker of Motorolla Defy - Satellite link

Thursday - buy out was in place by their largest invester

Friday - they pulled out on Friday and sadly Bullitt Group ceased trading and was handed to Lloyds as the receivers

Article - The Verge - Key manufacturer closes down

Motorola are the 'brand' behind Bullitt, to date no news of what they are wanting to do with regard to Bullitt going forward.

The founders of Bullitt have personally put money in place so subscribers can continue with their current service for at least the next month.

Bullitt are going to email customers to update them on what is going to happen, but to date nothing sent which has to be good news.

Last week this was launched and it certainly will be a ‘disrupter’ in this ever-evolving marketplace of two-way satellite communicators.

* Uses Inmarsat and Echostar satellite systems (Geostationary i.e. always at the same point in the sky)
Inmarsat built in uk assembled in Toulouse by Airbus defense, 14 satellites, echostar 10 satellites, L Band high speed – in tests messages 10 – 20 seconds
* SOS response manned by people – Focuspoint SOS response center
(Same one used by Spot Head office Florida , offices in 16 x locations)
* Works with an app on both Android10 and IOS14
* Uses both cellular, wifi coverage or satellites – intelligent switch with app to save Satellite messages when not needed using wifi or mobile
* If you send a message to someone without the app the message gets them to download the app – app to app messages
* Produced for Motorola by a company called Bullitt – who already releasing phones with technology built inbuilt this is a Satellite link, like the Garmin inReach messenger and Zoleo
* BUT, the big thing is the cost. Both the Zoleo and Garmin products start from £200.00 for the device and monthly cost from £12.99 / £18.00 a month and activation fee, Motorola Defy device for £149.99 includes 30 x messages a month with no fees for a year
After year 1 options £4.99 month 30 messages per month , £9.99 a month 125 messages per month ,£29.99 a month 400 messages per month
+ a great package called freedom pay £59.99 for the year and get 250 x messages total but could be 5 one month then 50 the next (250 total for the year)

gets around people who don’t walk/ explore every week etc – use intensively then not at all)

* Currently working in Europe and North America and Australia, New Zealand and Latin America my mid 2023 and all other regions before the end of the year- really fro land based eg only approx. 30miles out to sea from coastlines
* Waterproof (IP68 rating) meaning it’s sand, grit, dirt and dustproof as well as fully waterproof, MIL Spec 810h, only 70grams, 11mm thick
* Check in, share your location and send/ receive messages.
* SOS button and Check-in button can be used without connected app
* Live tracking is coming down the line and my answer to the cost of this was – the ‘bolt on price’ is TBC
* The only downside I can see is 12 hours of battery life but great for the day walker – just in case based on 2 check-ins and hour, due to size thinking waterproof bag, power bank, only 600mah battery from usb-c hence would not need big power bank
* Available Mid-April this year

So my thoughts are for the day walker/ climber/ cyclist/ remote worker this really does make two-way satellite communication accessible.

For the ‘explorer’ or those spending a lot of time ‘off grid’ and want a better battery life, grid ref etc (inReach mini) the Garmin and Zoleo products will meet those requirements.
As comparison Zoleo 12min tracking 200hrs +
Messenger 46 days with 30min tracking, inreach mini2 30 days with 30min tracking

Currently in Orbit
GPS – 31 with 24 operational 95% of the time – Dual Frequency L1 & L5
In March 2021, about 52% of GPS satellites had L5. By 2023, we expect about 71%

GLONASS – 23 Operational – Single Frequency L1

GALILEO – 30 with 24 operational – Dual Frequency E1 & E5

Accuracy

We tend to find using  GPS & Galileo we achieve approx.. 10ft (3m) Glonass similar
We have seen with GPS & Galileo / WASS & EGNOS on with a high sensitive antenna GPS Device e.g. GPSMap 65,66,86 Montana 700 Series accuracy down to approx. 8ft (2.5m)
We tend to find with Multi Band + GNSS  using a GPSMap65s or 66sr unit accuracy approx. – 7ft (2M) we have seen this down as low as 5ft (1.5m)

Things that affect accuracy - How are you holding the device, view of sky, tall buildings cliffs etc.

A handheld Device needs to lock onto 4 x Satellites locked to determine both your location and GPS height data.

Oregon 700– use GPS or GPS & Glonass + Waas / Egnoss

GPSMap65s & 66sr – GPS or Multi GNSS or Multi GNSS + Multi Band
Multi GNSS Picks up GPS, GLONASS & Galileo
Multi GNSS + Multi Band (Dual Frequency) - GPS, GLONASS & Galileo L1 (e1)  & GPS & Galileo L5 (e5)

When the 65 or 66sr receives multi-band from a satellite, it can use those multiple signals to do quality analysis and correction, reducing the error introduced by bouncing signals (multi-path error) and the earth's atmosphere.

What Advantages Do Multi-Band Devices Have Over Other Models?

More consistent tracklogs and improved positioning when using the device in challenging environments (e.g. around tall buildings in urban canyons as well as tree cover).

Can achieve accuracy within about +/- 2 meters or 6 feet under ideal conditions versus the +/- 3 meters or 10 feet accuracy of other models.

Detect (and reject) reflected satellite signals better than a single frequency receiver which improves accuracy.

Better equipped to account for and correct errors that can be introduced by atmospheric effects (e.g. ionosphere errors).

 

WAAS - Wide Area Augmentation System



WAAS consists of multiple ground reference stations positioned across the U.S. that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through 1 of 2 geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. With the clocks changing last weekend I see the Mountain rescue teams have, rightly, started a large campaign telling everybody they should be carrying a headtorch, as you can easily be caught out now the nights have drawn in.

We are not going to review headtorches (I will link to an article doing this in the show notes), but wea re just going to discuss the main things to think about when looking at headtorches –

* How waterproof – as they will be on your head, whatever the weather

Top tips for using a headtorch –

* Practice – like anything the more you use it and get to grips with it, the more familiar you are with it
* Have as low (brightness) as you can get away with
* Carry spare batteries/ headtorch
* Change/ charge your battery if you know you are going to be using it
* Store it in your rucksack somewhere where you know it is, easy to get access to
6. Keep Spare batteries close to body to keep warm will improve performance

3. Andy’s Top Tips - both Garmin and SatMap

Garmin – Height Data with Barometric Altimeter – calibrate on regular basis and make sure when resetting trip computer / trip data full Satellite lock – Setup Altimeter
Because barometric pressure changes with the weather, hikers must periodically re-calibrate their altimeters when they reach a known altitude, such as a trail junction or peak marked on a topographical map.

SatMap – OS Maps not loading – Remember if zoom out to far OS maps will not load only basemap top right of screen icon 3 x grey conical shapes (Layerd Map) must be there when you xoom in and then use button middle left to select Active 20 (Top left active 12)

2 – Geoffrey our GPS Training Bot

This week we have launched ‘Geoffrey the GPS Training Bot’.

We are currently showcasing him to the public as we are training him but in the next few weeks, he will find his final home inside the GPS Training online resource.

Geoffrey the bot constantly analyses and catalogues any answers we email to customers and with a little bit of AI, its more learning and indexing rather than artificial Intelligence, but AI is the current buzz word, he will hopefully start to answer your GPS tech questions.

We have all been very entertained in the last few days so please do give him a go and over time his knowledge will hopefully broaden as we add more data for him to draw from.

I have never seen such a demand from any new Outdoor GPS unit, why do think this has been Andy?

1. I think many of the customers who have had the 60s, 62s and then the GPSMAP64s have been waiting, for a number of years now, for a unit update and what a good one they have got.

I know Andy you have been starting to put together the videos for the ‘online resource’ is there anything you have come across since we discussed the unit in the last PodCast?

Last week Tom, from Garmin sales came and spent 24 hours with us and he brought with him the new GPSMAP66s from Garmin.

2. TOPO PRO mapping – to route or not to route

I know we have mentioned it in past Podcasts but we are still getting a number of questions over the phone regarding the TOPO PRO mapping from Garmin.

It is a little confusing I think it is the ‘TOPO’ that is throwing people.

So Andy, what is it?

1. OS mapping, not TOPO mapping (e.g. Topo Light, Topo Active)
2. It has turn by turn off road data within National Parks
3. You can get both 1:50k and 1:25k in the TOPO PRO versions

4. Andy’s Top Tips

Andrew Wallington has kindly written to us with his top tip –

Good Morning,

First of all thank you for your podcasts, site information and videos.

I have only been walking and hiking for the past 2 years and being of "mature years" I have a lot to learn.

I learn a lot from Andy's top tips and would like to add my own.

My route this week was about 25 miles in mid-Wales which I intended to do over 2 days but having completed 13 miles and getting to the bus stop for my return an hour early I decided to complete the whole walk that day. The weather was great and I felt capable of finishing even though I have never walked this far in one go.

Sunset was due at 18.30 which gave me time to finish in daylight I thought.

- I had not taken fatigue into account.

A bright clear day started to cloud over so reducing light

My Satmap was getting low on battery as the route required me to constantly check my position. I did not have a power back up as I intended to finish by midafternoon.

I did not have a torch for the same reason.

The last half mile was downhill through a very thick wood so there was little or no light in places even though there was light outside. This was not good for trip hazards.

2 – inReach Mini

1. What a response we have had to the inReach Mini.

2. I know we covered this in depth in last month’s Podcast but quickly Andy can you give a quick overview of what the inReach is?

3. Early next week there will be a software update so you can control it from your Fenix 5/ 5x watch, currently this is just beta but full version will be out next week, I know we have been selling many alongside Fenix watches what are the benefits of this?

4. We seem to keep the black ones in stock (just about) but the orange ones now have a delivery date of the 19th June and we have a waiting list and I must add we are also on that waiting list as we are going to keep one so we can do some videos and step by step guides for the online resource.

3 – The new Spot X - 2-Way Satellite Messenger

1. This is the first ‘two way’ communicator from Spot, it’s currently just available in the states but it will be hitting the UK market in TBC

2. Have you seen it Andy, I could not even find anything on YouTube which is amazing seeing you can buy it in the states already?

3. Looking at pictures of it, it seems very similar than the inReach mini but it has a full QWERT keyboard, it reminds me of my old Blackberry phone, do you remember this good old days?

4. Globalstar not the Iridium that Garmin inReach products use – Low orbit system

5. Some people are mentioning in their reviews - Globalstar system would only accept ONE message every twenty to thirty minutes

1. Garmin’s new inReach Mini

This week Garmin launched the all-new inReach Mini, this is the small brother/ sister of the Garmin inReach SE+ and the inReach Explorer units.

I must stress that at this moment of time we have not yet had our hands on one, we have some ordered and are hoping they will be in stock early next week, but we have been aware about this product for some time now.

On our fourth Podcast, in December last year we did an in-depth review of the inReach SE+ and inReach Explorer as our ‘sister’ business, Shepherds Walks Holidays uses inReach products on their walking holidays.

So Andy, can you give us a quick overview of both these units that have been with us for some time now.

- Two-way satellite communication

- You need a contract to get a Garmin inReach to work (like a mobile phone contract) and these start from £12.99/month but a little more for a more usable contract. I think we pay around £25.00/ month which is a good mid-range contract.

- Contracts vary according to number of Text messages you want to send each months and if your tracking points are included in the contract or not. The interesting thing is that all pre-set messages are unlimited and also the SOS button works on whatever contract you are on.

- They offer live tracking, the ability to send text messages, pre-set messages and they have a SOS button

- It can also be used as a GPS navigator, but I personally think it does not replace a standalone GPS navigational unit.

The SOS button, what happens if you press that?

- It notifies GEOS Worldwide, LTD is an independent emergency response organization headquartered outside of Houston, Texas. Their high-tech underground facility is the central component in their International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). That facet of their operation is somewhat self-explanatory. When GEOS receives a distress call, their IERCC department swings into action to coordinate an immediate and appropriate response.

- GEOS also maintains a large network of offices around the globe in Perth, Marrakech, Paris, London, New York, San Jose, and Los Angeles.

So what is difference with the inReach Mini?

- Send and receive inReach messages through compatible Garmin devices, including connected wearables and handhelds

- Palm-sized satellite communicator for adventures where size and weight matter, hence the mini

Garmin’s new map card – TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:50k –

Last week, after a very long wait, but more about that later, Garmin launched their 2018 map card and as hoped it has been modelled on it’s more expensive 1:25k brother or sister, the TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:25k map set.

So Andy, what has changed with this new map card?

- 2018 update of Map set – Garmin update every four years as ¼ of the country is released by OS as an updated version.
- Turn by turn routing within National Parks, the true ‘hiking’ ‘activity’ or ‘routing’ option.
- Isle of Man now added

The famous, or infamous ‚ hiking option. The biggest mistake people make when setting up any GPS unit and now it gets a little more confusing.

In the past on the 1:50k map we use the direct routing, how do we set up a GPS unit to utilise the feature when you are within National Parks.

- Set activity/ Routing
- Set up a new profile so you can easily swap as you go in or out of a National Parks

And now we can let the cat out of the bag regarding the development of this map card.

- We first received some pre-production cards late last year and we have been helping Garmin develop this product.
- Before everybody says – why did you not say everything – we have signed a nion discosure agreement with Garmin as we do get shown things well before it is announced to the public and press.
- I actually recorded a piece for the podcast between Christmas and New Year as at the time we all thought it was going to be released top market in January.
- It’s been fascinating to work with them.

SatMap Active 20 unit software update

Active 20 - "Snap to Foot", Snap to Bike, Snap to Road routing in Routes Menu – Create new Route

1. Our interview with Mike Brockhurst, the walking Englishman  – 

I recording this interview with Mike last week and it exceeded all expectation, he had been on my radar for a little time now but only when I interviewed him for the GPS Training Podcast I realised what a truly inspirational story he has.

2. GPX files, what are they and how do we get them on our GPS unit?

After my chat with Mike we really need to explore in depth the .gpx files that we referred to in the interview.

* What is a .gpx file?GPX is as a common GPS data format used by GPS Devices and many software applications. It can include waypoints, tracks, and routes. 
* Are these compatible with any outdoor GPS device?Yes with all the makes that we sell e.g. Garmin, Satmap, Memory Map.
* What other file formats will people come across when looking for ‘routes’ (which could be tracks) when online?There are other formats eg kml google earth, .fit watches, look for .GPX file for GPS device 
* So back to .gpx and the Walking Englishman website how do we get these onto our GPS unit, both Garmin and SatMap?Click on GPX Route file and look in your downloads for file, majority named as trackfile.gpx some are mane of walk.gpx, Import to basecamp then send to unit, satmap satsysnc or with new Active 20 copy and paste 
* What other websites or places can we source these .gpx files from? Search internet some we use www.gps-routes.co.uk, www.walkhighlands.co.uk
* How will we know if these .gpx files are routes or tracks, perhaps we should first explain the difference between the two before you tell us how to work out which they are?Route something you plan in software, track normally a recording of where someone has walked, in Garmin basecamp footprint icon shows track, 3 boxes joined together shows Route, SatMap puts in Routes folder. 
* How do can we check they are on your unit.Garmin Where to magnifying glass, Where to, Find search Routes or Tracks, SatMap Turn unit on / off Main Menu – Routes Menu

Any tips you have when downloading .gpx files and getting then on your GPS unit?

Garmin number of via points check in Basecamp -Direct Route 250, Track 10,0000 or Oregon 7** series 20,0000, SatMap does not have same stipulation but we do tend to try and stick to under 250 x points otherwise can be slow to load, different websites sometimes have their own instructions for download i.e. Right click save as, save link as, any issues with website itself contact website owner, create folder on desktop to save gpx downloads to

* Andy’s top tips


* Garmin – eTrex Touch, Oregon 7** series when changing batteries – turn off  - change batteries – turn on – use where to magnifying glass to check still navigating route etc, from map page swipe up – satellite signal far left – press start to restart recording.
* SatMap – Charging Active 20, large capacity 5000mah recommend turn off when charging and use genuine plug in mains rather than pc, will charge quicker.

It enables you to manage your GPS device from your desktop (both PC and Mac) and many things can now be done now with Garmin Express.

• You can

- Register all units
- Update unit software in units, rather than Web updater of doing this through Garmin BaseCamp
- Update Topo Active maps (Touch 20, 30, 25, 35, 750t)
- Oregon 7xx – connect it to your wifi
- Manage Connect IQ apps on your Oregon 7xx series

Changing The GPS Training Podcast a little, making it more into a ‘magazine’ programme.

I think we always need to evolve and move things forward so we are making the podcast a little less ‘techy’, we have our quarterly live ‘GPS Clinic’ that we steam live on Facebook. The Garmin term ‘Birdseye’ is one of two things - Satellite Subscription, enables you to download Satellite Imagery
How does this work?

1 year’s free subscription with Oregon 7**, GPSMap64s, Montana, can be purchased for £21.99 a year

Once you register unit using basecamp software – birdseye menu – select Birdseye Satellite imagery subscription, using tools draw around your required area (Recommend select small areas 1500 sqkm)

Download as much as you want for a year, still kept after the year.

Choice of resolutions, different parts of the world quality may differ – Standard, High, Highest

Memory 1500 sq km at High approx. 500mb, highest 1gb

Download to folder in basecamp then transfer to GPS Device Videos on our online training resource .

A Birdseye Select Voucher can be used to download 1:25k map as well as lots of other detailed map types

How does this work?

Activate to your GPS and country choice, 90 days to use up capacity, download to basecamp software then transfer to your GPS.

1. An in-depth look at Garmin inReach

1. What is the Garmin inReach, it’s not just a GPS unit is it?

• Two-way satellite communicator, using the Iridium satellites, the same as a Sat Phone uses.

• You can send both pre-set and text messages from the unit via satellites.

• It can also be used as a GPS navigator, but I personally think it does not replace a standalone GPS navigational unit.

• SOS button - GEOS Worldwide, LTD is an independent emergency response organization headquartered outside of Houston, Texas. Their high-tech underground facility is the central component in their International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). That facet of their operation is somewhat self-explanatory. When GEOS receives a distress call, their IERCC department swings into action to coordinate an immediate and appropriate response. Sounds simple enough, but what does that actually mean?

• GEOS also maintains a large network of offices around the globe in Perth, Marrakech, Paris, London, New York, San Jose, and Los Angeles.

• You need a contract to get a Garmin inReach to work (like a mobile phone contract) and these start from £12.99/month but a little more for a more usable contract. I think we pay around £25.00/ month which is a good mid-range contract.

• Contracts vary according to number of Text messages you want to send each months and if your tracking points are included in the contract or not.

1. What is a multi-activity GPS watch?

2. Fenix 5x What activities would this really be suitable for?

Andy liked it for Road Cycling & Mountain Biking, although I am not a trail runner could see it being used for Trail Running – Bring Tom in with this

Now let’s get down to the watch -

1. It comes with colour maps pre-loaded for all of Europe Topo Active look good on the watch

2. Going through the menus for the first time it is clear to see this is very much a Multisport Watch, fitness / activity tracker, navigational device and smart watch all in one.

3. It has the standard features that we expect to see on a fitness tracker, measuring your daily steps, distances, calories, sleep pattern etc but also has a built-in wrist based heart monitor and a VO2Max Estimator feature to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute, giving you an indication of your fitness level.

4. I found it easy to pair the watch with my smart phone using the Garmin connect app, with this app you can sync all your fitness data to review clearly on your phone, sync your trails that you have walked, cycled, ran etc and pairing the watch with your phone gives you the function to receive text message, email alerts and incoming phone call alerts from your mobile onto the screen of the watch.
