Fri, 03 May 2024 - 59min - 820 - CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir
Cover of “Life as We Know It Can Be” by Bill Weir On today’s show, I’ll spend the hour with CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir discussing the publication of his first book, “Life As We Know It (Can Be)”. Published by Chronicle Prism, award winning journalist and author Bill Weir shares heartfelt letters addressed to his newborn son, River, to be read in 2050. Like so many parents, Weir struggles with the legacy we are leaving for our children and the urgent need for climate action. Unlike the rest of us, though, his journalism has given him a front row seat to the impacts of climate change and access to the stories of the technology and people who are fighting to extend the life expectancy of our planet. Borrowing from Mr. Rogers, he urges his son to look for the helpers, and to find hope in the many ways we are fighting for clean energy, sustainable homes, resilient businesses, and stronger communities. Bill Weir is a veteran anchor, writer, producer, and host who came to CNN in 2013 after a decade of award-winning journalism at ABC News. Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 59min - 819 - 2023 Corporate Media Climate Coverage Continued and the Double Hatching of Cicadas
Photo Courtesy of Media Matters for America On today’s show, Media Matters for America‘s climate and energy senior researcher Evlondo Cooper is back to discuss more of his findings from the 2023 climate coverage by corporate media or lack thereof. A new analysis from Media Matters’ Climate and Energy Program found that coverage of environmental justice stories on morning and nightly news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC suffered a decrease in the total number of segments in 2023, airing just 9 segments about environmental impacts, regulations, or health hazards that included a mention of a socially marginalized community. This is down from 12 segments in 2022 and 19 segments in 2021. We’ll switch gears and get an education on the double hatching of cicadas from University of Connecticut professor Dr. Chris Simon. Of all the creatures that are a marker for healthy biodiversity, one of the best examples is the cicada. This spring, two large broods of periodical cicadas—one in the Midwest that emerges every 13 years and one in the Southeast that emerges every 17 years—will come out at the same time. Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 32min - 818 - Water Is Love – Ripples Of Regeneration
Courtesy of Water is Love Production Team “Water is Love: Ripples of Regeneration” follows a group of young people grappling with the climate crisis while we journey around the world to share inspiring stories of regenerative ecosystem design to create water retention in communities, villages, and regions. They touch upon traditional ecological knowledge, how water makes climate, and the importance of restoring complete water cycles. Through inspiring stories from successful projects in India, Kenya, and Portugal, we aim to spark conversations and actions that contribute to a regenerative and resilient world. As we’re facing both the growing devastating impacts of climate disruption and the failure of governments to act, this film points to an often overlooked need and possibility: community-driven decentralized water management as a critical key for surviving — and thriving in — this century.
