This month marks the much-anticipated premiere of the Downton Abbey movie, the follow-up to the massively popular television series. In this episode, we are joined by guest host Sara McGillivray to discuss her research on the "Downton Abbey Effect." Sara explores how the series transformed heritage tourism and conservation, ultimately saving the country house that Downton is based on: Highclere Castle. She also examines how the history of Highclere Castle, the Carnarvon family, and the decline of the aristocracy are portrayed on screen.

Our summer road trip series concludes in Central Canada as we explore sites in Ontario and Quebec. Whether it is their history or architecture that captivates you, or whether you’ve encountered them in person or on pages, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who is not intrigued by castles. And someone who is particularly interested in these magnificent structures is Ali Norton. Ali is a PhD student studying at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medieval Studies. Her thesis explores castles through the lens of local history, using GIS analysis to examine the relationships between castles and landscapes, lordly identities, and settlement nucleation in the East Midlands. Ali joins us today to tell us more.

On September 5, 1945, cipher clerk Igor Gouzenko walked out of the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa with 109 classified Soviet documents in his suitcase. Gouzenko had made the choice to defect - and his decision arguably sparked the beginning of the Cold War.

In our second season opener, we are joined by Deborah Dobbins and Dr. Jenna Bailey to discuss their recent oral history project and documentary, We are the Roots: Black Settlers and Their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies. 

The film explores the experiences of African American settlers to Western Canada, primarily those who came from the United States and settled in Alberta and Saskatchewan between 1905 and 1912. It includes the stories of 19 descendants of these original settlers, recorded in oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Jenna Bailey and Dr. David Este in collaboration with Edmonton's Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots.
