Thu, 12 Oct 2023 - 147 - Revolutionizing Accessibility: Why Ayes founders are leaving Europe to go into the US Market
“Within a month we had a 100 testers using the application. And within 3 months of releasing the app in the US we helped users cross over 200,000 streets.”
This is the phenomenal story of a few engineers who came together to help a friend. A friend who is blind.
You see one day their friend was complaining that he wished he had a way to be able to navigate intersections. Pedestrian signals work for those who can see, not for those who are visually impaired.
That’s when Willem Van de Mierop and his friends decided to dive into this and see if they could develop an app that could use AI and a smartphone’s back camera to recognize pedestrian signals.
Pretty cool huh?
Well if the technology itself doesn’t interest you, other things in this conversation will surprise you. For example, did you know:
NY City lost a $1 billion dollar lawsuit to increase accessibility of the city or the visually impaired? It cost $64k to equip intersections with audible speakers for the blind?Sometimes it makes sense to leave the European market in favor of the US market?Hear this fascinating story of the creation of the OKO app.

Thu, 10 Aug 2023 - 138 - Giving First, Learning Always with Dutch Startup Founder Julien Jukema
“You gave away 30% of the profits to a cancer foundation?”
“When I ran my 2nd hand fashion store, yes.” said Julien
“And you created a project where you awarded Covid front line workers with free hotel stays and dinners at fancy restaurants?” I asked, completely mesmerized
“Yes. It was called Nederland Bedankt” said Julien Jukema of Anywyse
There’s something inside Julien that compels him to having a giving first, and then give some more, kind of attitude.
A characteristic that not many people have.
But the kind of trait that allows him to have an audacious goal of having 100 million people learn better by 2030.
How?
Through Anywyse.audio – a tool that allows you to transform any text into a complete audio-learning experience.
Backed by science, it helps make on the go learning more fun and convenient.
And the kicker?
Julien got the idea when he got cancer and lost his ability to read temporarily.
Ep. 105 of ICL Julien shares more.

Thu, 22 Jun 2023 - 133 - Pivoting a Startup from a B2C to a B2B focus with Maurits Last
In this week’s episode of Innovators Can Laugh, I sat down withMaurits Last, the founder ofSwap-box, a startup that is making a real impact by producing high quality reusable packaging for B2B companies. They offer a modular service of reusable packaging, logistics, tracking technology, and cleaning that fits any type of operation or event.
Maurits is a young and passionate entrepreneur. He spent some time living in Spain when he was younger so there is a unique blend of growing up in two different cultures: one where people are very direct and to the point, and the other where people take siestas and ‘manana’ is the norm.
One of the big challenges Maurits faces when launching Swap box is that he had to pivot the business from a B2C to a B2B focus. This impacted everything from logistics and marketing to sales. But the pivot was a good one as there are more than 120 restaurants on board and more than 5,000 people have started using Swap box.

Thu, 08 Jun 2023 - 132 - From StarCraft Player to Maximizing Customer Lifetime Value with Valentin Radu
Over the last couple of decades, Valentin has held a variety of jobs (and launched a few companies). Everything from selling cookbooks on the street to launching an internet service company just because he wanted to play Startcrat on broadband!
Then he launched one of Romania’s largest online car insurance companies doing 3-4M in annual turnover. But they weren’t profitable.
Based on that experience and discovering why determining customer lifetime value is critical for companies, he runs Omniconvert. His company powers over 20,000 websites including brands like Orange, Sephora and Decathlon. By helping brands be more customer centric through advanced segmentation, Omniconvert is able to help brands better acquire, nurture and retain customers.

Thu, 09 Mar 2023 - 120 - From Management Consulting at BCG to Creating an Accounting Software Startup
Taking calculated risks can often lead to great rewards if done correctly. In this chat with Alexandru Anghel, co-founder of Solo, Alexandru shares journey from management consultant to startup founder.
To begin, Alex quit his job as a management consultant and joined an incubator run by an experienced entrepreneur who became the first investor of Solo. Solo solves a problem for customers by providing them with an easy way to manage their finances and investments. It provides an automated system with transparent information on income, taxes, and paperwork filing that is easy to access and understand.
What I love about this conversation is that Alex shares wonderful advice when seeking fundraising for the first time, his approach to creating a winning culture, and why bootstrapping for as long as you can has its advantages.

Thu, 26 Jan 2023 - 114 - How to Implement Innovative Carbon Removal Projects with Matthias Rettenbacher of Carbony
Matthias Rettenbacher is the founder of Carbony - a European marketplace for high quality carbon removal projects. In this conversation, he shares his passion of reversing climate change through biochar and enhanced weathering technology. We also discuss his preference for dinner with Gary Vee over $50,000 cash and he shares an amazing gift he received from a friend who was like a father figure to him.
Matthias’ goal is to neutralize 500 million tons of emissions by 2040. He recently retired from his regular job to focus full-time on this project and has gained knowledge on the latest regulations and publications from the European Union on Zones. Projects typically last one or two days once research and preparation work are done.
The volcano rocks or ash used in projects are sourced within a radius of 100-150 kilometers from quarries located in Austria, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Matthias is also working with an Austrian university based in Vienna to conduct research on the nutrients trees get, their survival rate, growth rate, and carbon sequestration.

Thu, 08 Sep 2022 - 94 - On a Mission To Be The Global Leader in the Refurbished Market for Tech Products with Reynold Simonnet
Imagine you’re in England and walk into a vegan restaurant. While looking at the menu, you notice that each dish shows its carbon footprint. You’re thinking about ordering a hamburger, but see that the beef burger’s carbon emissions are a whopping 3 kilos! Or, ten times the amount of the vegan alternative. Would you still order the beef burger?
This episode isn’t about going vegan, but rather, the rapid and high consumption of electronics and one man’s journey to simplify the supply chain of secondhand products. AKA: The circular economy.
In this conversation, we learn how French startup founder Reynold Simonnet was forced to decide if he should buy the company that employed him (it was bankrupt), how he turned things around by focusing on B2B instead of B2C, and other interesting things like the time he was a driver for a top ten futbol player.
